How money has rotated so far
- 2017–18: ICOs and payment coins. XRP, Bitcoin Cash, NEM, IOTA, EOS and other “Ethereum killers” peaked in January 2018 and lost 80–95% in the following year.
- 2020: DeFi summer. Lending and trading apps (Compound, Uniswap, Aave, Yearn) grew from almost nothing into a sector of their own, which peaked in May 2021.
- 2021: Layer 1s, memecoins, NFTs and gaming. Dogecoin and DeFi peaked in May; Solana, Avalanche, Terra and the gaming and metaverse coins (Axie, Sandbox, Decentraland) in November.
- 2022: the crash. Terra (LUNA and its UST stablecoin) collapsed in May, FTX in November. Money hid in stablecoins and Bitcoin.
- 2024: AI and memecoins again. Layer 2s peaked in March; memecoins and AI coins together in December, with the AI-agent craze.
- 2025–26: trading platforms and privacy. Perp DEXs (Hyperliquid, Aster, Lighter) and exchange tokens took the lead, and privacy coins came back with Zcash.
How to read it
- Look at “vs Bitcoin”, not only dollars. In a bull market almost everything rises. Rotation is when one narrative rises faster than Bitcoin.
- A narrative that grows its share fast is often late. Every bubble here ended within months of its fastest growth, usually losing 60–95%.
- Market cap is not cash. It is price × coins in circulation, so it also grows when new coins are released or a new coin launches into a narrative (Hyperliquid did that for perp DEXs). See the Token Unlock Calendar.

What is in each narrative
Each narrative is a basket of the coins that make up most of its value, including coins that faded (they stay in, or past bubbles would look smaller than they were). Each coin counts in one narrative only.
