Overview
Tangem is best known for its card-shaped hardware wallet. In early 2026 it launched Tangem Mobile Wallet: a free hot wallet built into the same app, so you can start using self-custody without buying anything.
How it works
You create the wallet in the Tangem app. Your keys are encrypted and stored in your phone’s secure hardware (Secure Enclave on iPhone, StrongBox/Keystore on Android). You back it up with a recovery phrase — the app does not force you to do so at creation, but you should do it immediately.
When your balance grows, you can upgrade the mobile wallet to a Tangem card or ring for cold storage.
Features
- Same supported assets as the Tangem app: Bitcoin, Ethereum and EVM chains, Solana, XRP, TON, Tron and thousands of tokens.
- Buy, sell, swap and stake through partners.
- WalletConnect for DeFi apps.
- Requires iOS 18 or Android 10 or later.
Security
The wallet has been audited by Cure53. As a hot wallet on your phone it is less secure than the Tangem cards, and unlike the cards it relies on a recovery phrase.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Free and quick to start.
- Smooth upgrade path to hardware.
- Uses the phone’s secure chip.
Cons
- Hot wallet: less secure than the cards.
- Partner fees on swaps and purchases.
- Backup is not forced at setup.
Who it’s for
People who want to try self-custody for free and plan to move to a Tangem hardware wallet later.
Verdict
Tangem Mobile is a sensible free entry point into the Tangem ecosystem. Back up your phrase right away, and upgrade to a card once you hold meaningful amounts.
