Overview

World Liberty Financial (WLF) is a crypto company launched in 2024 and linked to Donald Trump and his family; an entity affiliated with Trump owns a large stake. It aims to build DeFi services and issues the USD1 stablecoin (reviewed separately).

The WLFI token is its governance token. It was first sold privately, then became tradable on 1 September 2025, briefly reaching about $0.33.

How it works

  • WLFI holders vote on the platform’s decisions.
  • Fees from WLF’s protocol-owned liquidity are used to buy back and burn WLFI.
  • A listed company, ALT5 Sigma, raised money in 2025 to hold WLFI as a treasury asset.

Controversies

  • Frozen tokens. In September 2025, WLF froze the WLFI held by Justin Sun, one of its biggest investors, after transfers from his address, showing that the company can block holders’ tokens.
  • Loan. In 2026, it emerged that WLF had used 5 billion of its own WLFI tokens as collateral to borrow $75 million in stablecoins on the lending platform Dolomite. WLFI fell sharply.
  • Unlock plan. In April 2026, WLF proposed new terms for about 62 billion locked tokens: early supporters would receive theirs after a two-year wait plus two years of vesting, up to 4.5 billion team tokens would be burned, and holders who refuse would stay locked indefinitely. Burns of team tokens began in May 2026.
  • Politics. Critics see serious conflicts of interest in a president’s family running a crypto business while crypto rules are being written.

The WLFI token

WLFI at a glance
Maximum supply 100 billion WLFI
In circulation (Oct 2026) about 31.8 billion
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $0.052
All-time high about $0.33 (September 2025)
Market cap about $1.65 billion (#58)

Risks

  • Political risk. The project’s fortunes are tied to the Trump family and US politics.
  • Centralized control. The company can freeze tokens and set unlock terms.
  • Supply overhang. Two-thirds of WLFI remains locked.
  • Governance. Holders’ votes have limited power against the company’s decisions.

Our verdict

World Liberty Financial has powerful connections and a stablecoin that has grown quickly. But WLFI has been marked by frozen tokens, a loan backed by its own token, disputed unlock terms and deep political controversy, and it has lost about 84% of its value. WLFI is a very high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
