Overview
TRON is a Layer 1 blockchain founded in 2017 by Justin Sun, one of crypto’s most visible and controversial figures. It started as a platform for entertainment and content, but became something else: the main highway for USDT, the largest stablecoin.
Over $80 billion of USDT sits on TRON, and in 2026 the network handled tens of billions of dollars in USDT transfers every day. In many countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, “sending USDT” usually means sending it on TRON.
How it works
- TRON uses delegated proof of stake: TRX holders vote for 27 Super Representatives, who produce blocks.
- Transactions are fast and cheap. Users can pay fees by staking TRX for “energy” and “bandwidth” instead of spending TRX.
- TRON is compatible with Ethereum-style smart contracts, and hosts DeFi apps such as JustLend and SUN.io.
The TRX token
| TRX at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Supply (Oct 2026) | about 95 billion TRX |
| Maximum supply | none (new TRX issued, part of fees burned) |
| Price (29 Oct 2026) | about $0.33 |
| All-time high | about $0.43 (December 2024) |
| Market cap | about $31 billion (#8) |
New TRX is issued to validators, while part of every fee is burned. When the network is busy, more is burned than created, so the supply can shrink. A listed company, Tron Inc. on Nasdaq, holds TRX as a treasury asset.
Risks
- Centralization. Only 27 block producers, and much influence rests with Justin Sun and entities around him.
- Founder risk. Justin Sun has faced US regulatory action; the SEC case against him was paused in 2025.
- Misuse. TRON’s cheap USDT transfers are widely used by scammers, money launderers and sanctioned groups. Tether regularly freezes USDT on TRON, for example $182 million in January 2026.
- Concentration. If Tether or users moved USDT elsewhere, TRON would lose its main use.
TRON vs. the competition
| TRON | Ethereum | Solana | |
|---|---|---|---|
| USDT supply | Largest share | Second | Smaller |
| Typical fee | Very low | Higher on mainnet | Very low |
| Validators | 27 | ~1 million | ~1,000+ |
| Linked figure | Justin Sun | No company | No company |
Our verdict
TRON is one of crypto’s most-used networks: for millions of people, it is simply how they move dollars. Its DeFi is large, and TRX has held up better than most tokens.
But it is centralized, closely tied to one person and often linked to illicit activity, which keeps regulatory risk high. TRX is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
