The Sandbox review

Reviewed

Overview

The Sandbox began in 2012 as a mobile game by Arthur Madrid and Sébastien Borget, where players built worlds from blocks. In 2018 it was bought by Animoca Brands, a Hong Kong investment and gaming company, and rebuilt as a blockchain metaverse: a virtual world where players own land and items as NFTs.

In the 2021 metaverse boom, The Sandbox became a symbol of the trend. Celebrities and brands such as Snoop Dogg, Adidas, Warner Music and Ubisoft bought virtual land, some plots sold for millions of dollars, and the SAND token reached a market value of several billion dollars.

How it works

  • LAND: The Sandbox’s map is divided into 166,464 plots of LAND, sold as NFTs. Owners can build games and experiences on them.
  • Creator tools: VoxEdit lets users design 3D items, and Game Maker lets them build games without coding.
  • Seasons: The Sandbox runs time-limited “seasons” with quests and rewards to bring players in.

SAND is used to buy LAND and items, to pay fees, to stake and to vote in the project’s DAO.

The 2025 overhaul

Despite the hype, The Sandbox struggled to attract regular players. In August 2025, Animoca Brands took more direct control:

  • about half of the roughly 250 staff were laid off and several offices closed;
  • the co-founders left their executive roles: Borget became an ambassador and Madrid non-executive chairman;
  • Animoca’s CEO Robby Yung took over as CEO;
  • the company signaled a move away from the metaverse, including plans for a meme-coin launchpad on Base.

The team said SAND, LAND and other assets remain unchanged, but the project’s long-term direction is less clear.

The SAND token

SAND at a glance
Maximum supply 3 billion SAND
In circulation (Oct 2026) about 2.94 billion
Price (21 Oct 2026) about $0.058
All-time high about $8.40 (November 2021)
Market cap about $170 million (#199)

Almost all SAND is now in circulation, so future unlocks are small. The problem is demand: with few players and falling land prices, there is little need for SAND.

Security and reliability

The Sandbox runs on Ethereum and Polygon and has not suffered major hacks of its core contracts. The main risks are business risks: low player numbers, a strategy in flux, and dependence on Animoca Brands’ priorities.

Our verdict

The Sandbox captured the 2021 metaverse dream better than almost any project, with famous brands and creator tools that let anyone build games.

But the players never came in large numbers, half the team was laid off in 2025, and the project is moving away from its original vision. SAND has lost about 99% of its value. It is a very high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
