Polkadot review

Reviewed

Overview

Polkadot was founded by Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum and author of its technical specification, and launched in 2020. It is developed with support from the Web3 Foundation and the engineering firm Parity Technologies.

Polkadot’s idea is a network of blockchains: specialized chains (originally called parachains) connect to a central “relay chain” that provides shared security, so new chains don’t need to recruit their own validators.

How it works

  • Validators stake DOT to secure the relay chain and all connected chains.
  • Polkadot 2.0 (2024) replaced expensive multi-year slot auctions with coretime, which chains can buy as needed.
  • In 2025–2026, most activity, including staking, moved from the relay chain to Asset Hub; by October 2026, almost all DOT had migrated.
  • JAM, a major redesign by Gavin Wood, is meant to turn Polkadot into a more general computer; it was not yet on mainnet in mid-2026.

The DOT token

DOT at a glance
Supply (Oct 2026) about 1.71 billion DOT
Maximum supply 2.1 billion DOT (new cap)
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $1.01
All-time high about $55 (November 2021)
Market cap about $1.7 billion (#56)

DOT used to have no cap and about 7–8% yearly inflation. Token holders voted to introduce a hard cap of 2.1 billion DOT, with much lower issuance, which took effect in 2026. Spot DOT ETFs have been filed for by firms including 21Shares and Grayscale.

Risks

  • Low adoption. Few connected chains have attracted many users; DeFi activity is small.
  • Complexity. Polkadot’s architecture is hard for newcomers to understand.
  • Execution. Big upgrades like JAM take years.
  • Competition. Ethereum’s Layer 2s, Cosmos and Avalanche offer similar “many chains” models.

Our verdict

Polkadot has impressive technology, a respected founder and a newly disciplined supply. But years after launch, its ecosystem remains small, and DOT has lost about 98% of its value. DOT is a high-risk bet on a long-delayed comeback. Invest only what you can afford to lose.
