PancakeSwap review

DeFi · DEXBNB Chain

Reviewed

Overview

PancakeSwap launched in September 2020 on BNB Chain (then Binance Smart Chain), created by an anonymous team of “chefs”. It became the largest decentralized exchange on BNB Chain and one of the largest in crypto, now also running on Ethereum, Base, Arbitrum and other networks.

How it works

  • Users swap tokens through liquidity pools, with versions similar to Uniswap’s (including concentrated liquidity).
  • PancakeSwap also offers perpetual futures, prediction games, lotteries and token launches (IFOs).
  • Fees go to liquidity providers, with a share used to burn CAKE.

Tokenomics 3.0

In April 2025, CAKE holders approved Tokenomics 3.0:

  • the old veCAKE voting system was retired;
  • protocol revenue goes to weekly CAKE burns;
  • the goal is net deflation of at least 4% a year.

In 2025, CAKE’s supply fell by about 8%, from roughly 380 million to 350 million. In January 2026, holders voted to cut the maximum supply from 450 million to 400 million. PancakeSwap reported record trading volume in 2025, around $670 billion.

The CAKE token

CAKE at a glance
Maximum supply 400 million CAKE (cut in 2026)
In circulation (Oct 2026) about 346 million
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $2.09
All-time high about $43.96 (April 2021)
Market cap about $720 million (#87)

Risks

  • BNB Chain dependence. Most volume comes from BNB Chain, including meme-coin waves.
  • Volume swings. Trading in 2026 has cooled compared with 2025.
  • Competition. Other DEXs and aggregators compete for the same trades.

PancakeSwap vs. the competition

Our verdict

PancakeSwap has transformed CAKE from a high-inflation farming token into a deflationary one, backed by a busy exchange. But it remains tied to BNB Chain’s fortunes, and CAKE is far below its 2021 peak. CAKE is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
