NEAR Protocol review

Reviewed

Overview

NEAR Protocol is a Layer 1 blockchain launched in 2020. It was co-founded by Illia Polosukhin, one of the authors of “Attention Is All You Need”, the 2017 research paper behind today’s AI models like ChatGPT, and Alexander Skidanov.

NEAR focuses on being easy to use: readable account names (like “alice.near”), low fees and fast transactions. In recent years it has positioned itself as the blockchain for AI and cross-chain trading.

How it works

  • Sharding (Nightshade): the network splits work across several shards that run in parallel, so it can scale as demand grows.
  • Proof of stake: validators stake NEAR to secure the network.
  • Chain signatures: NEAR accounts can control addresses on other chains, including Bitcoin and Ethereum.
  • NEAR Intents: users state what they want (“swap my BTC for SOL”) and specialized solvers compete to do it across chains. Volume grew from under $1 billion to over $32 billion in about a year.

AI ambitions

NEAR promotes “user-owned AI”: AI agents that hold their own wallets and act for users, and private AI computing. Bitwise has pointed to AI agents as a growing use case, though most activity on NEAR is still human-driven.

The NEAR token

NEAR at a glance
Supply (Oct 2026) about 1.31 billion NEAR (inflation ~2.5%)
Price (29 Oct 2026) about $4.62
All-time high about $20.44 (January 2022)
Market cap about $6 billion (#20)

NEAR pays fees, is staked for rewards and is used in governance. In 2025, validators voted to halve inflation from about 5% to about 2.5% a year.

On 29 September 2026, Bitwise launched the first US spot NEAR ETF (ticker NRR), which stakes much of its NEAR. Grayscale has also filed for one.

Risks

  • Usage. NEAR’s DeFi holds only about $200 million (DeFiLlama).
  • AI hype. The AI story could take years to turn into real demand.
  • Competition. Solana, Ethereum’s Layer 2s and newer chains compete for the same users.
  • Volatility. NEAR more than doubled in the month before its ETF launch; such rallies can reverse.

NEAR vs. the competition

US spot ETF Yes (2026) Yes Yes

Our verdict

NEAR has turned years of good technology into a real niche: cross-chain trading through Intents, with an ETF and a credible AI story on top. It is one of the more interesting Layer 1s of 2026.

But its ecosystem is still small, and much of its value rests on future AI adoption. NEAR is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
