Overview
Immutable is a company and blockchain platform for Web3 games: games where players truly own their in-game items as NFTs and can trade them freely. It was founded in Sydney, Australia, by brothers Robbie and James Ferguson, and became known through its card game Gods Unchained.
Immutable’s goal is to make blockchain gaming feel like normal gaming: no gas fees, no complicated wallets, and fast trading of items between players.
How it works
Immutable runs two networks:
- Immutable X, launched in 2021, a Layer 2 for Ethereum built with StarkWare’s zero-knowledge technology. It lets players mint and trade NFTs with no gas fees.
- Immutable zkEVM, launched in 2024 with Polygon’s technology, an Ethereum-compatible chain where game studios can build full smart-contract games.
On top sits Immutable Passport, a login system that gives players a wallet with just an email or social account, and Immutable Play, a hub where players discover games and earn rewards.
Games on Immutable
Hundreds of games have announced plans to build on Immutable, from indie studios to larger partners. Well-known titles include Gods Unchained, Guild of Guardians, Illuvium and RavenQuest, and Korean publisher MARBLEX brought several titles to Immutable zkEVM.
Most are still small by mainstream standards, and many announced games take years to launch, if they do at all.
The IMX token
| IMX at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | 2 billion IMX |
| In circulation (Oct 2026) | about 904 million |
| Price (21 Oct 2026) | about $0.15 |
| All-time high | about $9.52 (November 2021) |
| Market cap | about $140 million (#229) |
IMX pays gas on Immutable zkEVM, can be staked for rewards and gives governance rights. A share of marketplace fees is paid in IMX. Tokens for the team, investors and the ecosystem have been released over several years, adding supply.
Regulation
In late 2024, the US SEC sent Immutable a Wells notice, a warning that it might bring charges over the IMX token. In March 2025, the SEC closed the investigation without any action, removing a major uncertainty.
Security and reliability
Immutable’s networks have run without major hacks. The main risks are about adoption:
- Gaming adoption. Most gamers are skeptical of NFTs and crypto in games, and many Web3 games have shut down.
- Token value. IMX benefits only partly from network usage, and activity is modest.
- Competition. Ronin (Axie Infinity), Avalanche game chains, Solana and others compete for studios.
Immutable vs. the competition
| Immutable | Ronin | The Sandbox | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type | Gaming platform (L2 + zkEVM) | Gaming blockchain | Single metaverse game |
| Known for | Gods Unchained, Passport | Axie Infinity, Pixels | Virtual land, brand partners |
| Gas for players | Free on Immutable X | Low / sponsored | Low |
| Token | IMX | RON | SAND |
Our verdict
Immutable is one of the most serious attempts to bring blockchain to gaming: easy wallets, no gas fees and a long list of games, with its legal cloud cleared in 2025.
But Web3 gaming still hasn’t found its breakout hit, and IMX has lost about 98% of its value since 2021. IMX is a high-risk bet on blockchain games going mainstream. Invest only what you can afford to lose.
