Overview
CRO is the token of Crypto.com, the exchange and app known for its Visa cards and big sports sponsorships (including the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles). The token launched in 2018, and in 2021 Crypto.com launched Cronos, its own blockchain, compatible with Ethereum apps.
How it works
- Crypto.com perks: staking CRO in the app unlocks higher card tiers, cashback, lower fees and other rewards.
- Cronos chain: CRO pays gas fees for apps on Cronos, including DeFi and games.
- Validators stake CRO to secure the network.
The 2025 reissue controversy
In 2021, Crypto.com burned 70 billion CRO, about 70% of the supply, saying it would never be used again. In March 2025, a governance vote reissued those 70 billion tokens into a reserve for a future ETF and strategic purposes. The vote passed thanks to large holders closely linked to Crypto.com, despite strong opposition from many community members. Critics called it a broken promise.
Trump Media deal
In August 2025, Crypto.com and Trump Media (owner of Truth Social) announced Trump Media Group CRO Strategy, a listed company set up to hold CRO, starting with billions of dollars’ worth of CRO, about 19% of the supply. The two companies also planned ETFs under the Truth.Fi brand. Lawmakers raised concerns about conflicts of interest.
The CRO token
| CRO at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | 100 billion CRO (after the 2025 reissue) |
| In circulation (Oct 2026) | about 50.7 billion |
| Price (29 Oct 2026) | about $0.054 |
| All-time high | about $0.89 (November 2021) |
| Market cap | about $2.7 billion (#40) |
Risks
- Centralized control. Crypto.com can steer votes and supply decisions, as the reissue showed.
- Political ties. The Trump Media link brings regulatory and reputational risk.
- Locked supply. Large amounts in reserves and treasury companies could be sold in the future.
- Exchange risk. CRO’s value depends on Crypto.com’s business.
Cronos vs. the competition
| CRO | BNB | OKB | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange | Crypto.com | Binance | OKX |
| Supply | 100 billion (reissued 2025) | Shrinking to 100 million | Fixed 21 million |
| Known for | Visa cards, app perks | BNB Chain | X Layer |
Our verdict
CRO offers real perks to Crypto.com’s millions of users, and the Trump Media treasury gives it a large backer. But reversing a promised burn hurt trust badly, supply is controlled by the company, and the price is about 94% below its peak. CRO is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
