Overview
Cardano is a proof-of-stake Layer 1 founded by Charles Hoskinson, a co-founder of Ethereum. It launched in 2017 and is developed mainly by Input Output (IOG), alongside the Cardano Foundation and EMURGO.
Cardano is known for its research-first approach: its core designs are published in peer-reviewed academic papers before being built. Supporters see this as careful engineering; critics see it as slow.
How it works
- Ouroboros, Cardano’s consensus system, chooses block producers in proportion to their stake.
- Staking is simple and liquid: you delegate your ADA to a stake pool, earn about 2–3% a year, and can move or sell your ADA at any time. Your coins never leave your wallet.
- Smart contracts (Plutus) arrived in 2021, using a model (eUTXO) that differs from Ethereum’s and makes apps harder to port.
Governance and the treasury
Since the Chang and Plomin upgrades (2024–2025), Cardano is run by on-chain governance: ADA holders, elected representatives and a constitutional committee vote on changes and on spending from Cardano’s treasury, which holds over a billion ADA. In 2026, the community approved large withdrawals, for example 70 million ADA for stablecoin and oracle integrations, while other proposals, including one from IOG, struggled to get enough votes.
Midnight and Leios
- Midnight, a privacy-focused partner chain with its own NIGHT token, launched its main network in 2026, with large companies such as Google Cloud and MoneyGram among its early node operators.
- Ouroboros Leios is Cardano’s big scaling upgrade, aiming for over 1,000 transactions per second. It was in testing in 2026, with mainnet targeted for later.
The ADA token
| ADA at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | 45 billion ADA |
| In circulation (Oct 2026) | about 37.6 billion |
| Price (29 Oct 2026) | about $0.20 |
| All-time high | about $3.09 (September 2021) |
| Market cap | about $7.7 billion (#18) |
Risks
- Low usage. DeFi on Cardano holds under $100 million, according to DeFiLlama, tiny for a top-20 coin.
- Slow delivery. Key upgrades often arrive later than promised.
- Organizational disputes. Disagreements between Hoskinson and the Cardano Foundation have been public.
- ETF uncertainty. Spot ADA ETFs have been filed for but not confirmed.
Cardano vs. the competition
| Cardano | Ethereum | Solana | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launched | 2017 | 2015 | 2020 |
| Staking | Liquid, from wallet | 32 ETH or via services | Delegation |
| DeFi size (Oct 2026) | < $100 million | ~$50 billion | ~$5.9 billion |
| Governance | Fully on-chain with treasury | Off-chain, by developers | Off-chain |
Our verdict
Cardano is thoughtfully designed, has strong governance and a passionate community, and Midnight adds a promising privacy offering. For holders, its easy, liquid staking is a real plus.
But usage remains very low, upgrades are slow, and ADA is about 93% below its peak. ADA is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
