Overview
BitTorrent is one of the internet’s best-known file-sharing technologies. In 2018, the company was bought by Justin Sun, founder of TRON, and in January 2019 it launched the BTT token on TRON through a Binance Launchpad sale.
In December 2021, BTT was redenominated: each old BTT became 1,000 new BTT (“BitTorrent [New]”).
How it works
- BitTorrent Speed was meant to reward users who share files with BTT, encouraging faster downloads.
- BTFS (BitTorrent File System) is a decentralized storage network.
- BitTorrent Chain (BTTC) connects TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain; BTT holders can stake to vote for its validators.
In practice, most BitTorrent users never touch BTT, and demand for the token comes mainly from trading.
The BTT token
| BTT at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | 990 trillion BTT |
| In circulation (Oct 2026) | about 965 trillion |
| Price (29 Oct 2026) | about $0.00000036 |
| All-time high | about $0.0000034 (January 2022) |
| Market cap | about $350 million (#130) |
Risks
- Huge supply. With nearly a quadrillion tokens, price gains require enormous demand.
- Weak use. BTT’s role in the BitTorrent apps is limited.
- Founder control. Justin Sun’s ecosystem controls the project.
- Legal. BTT was named in the SEC’s 2023 case against Justin Sun, which was paused in 2025.
BTT vs. the competition
| BitTorrent (BTT) | Filecoin | TRON (TRX) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus | File sharing, storage | Decentralized storage | Payments blockchain |
| Supply | 990 trillion | ~2 billion | ~95 billion |
| Real usage | Limited | Small paid demand | Very high (USDT) |
Our verdict
BTT carries a famous name, but the token has never become essential to BitTorrent’s users. With a huge supply and Justin Sun’s control, it is mainly a speculative asset. BTT is a very high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
