Overview
Algorand was founded by Silvio Micali, an MIT professor who won the Turing Award, computing’s highest honor, for his work on cryptography. Its main network launched in June 2019.
Algorand was designed to solve the “blockchain trilemma”: being secure, decentralized and fast at the same time. It is used for payments, tokenized assets and government and enterprise projects.
How it works
- Pure proof of stake: any ALGO holder can take part in consensus; a random, secret committee is chosen for each block.
- Instant finality: blocks are produced about every 3 seconds and are final immediately; the chain doesn’t fork.
- Smart contracts and native tokens are built in.
- State proofs already use post-quantum cryptography to prove Algorand’s history to other chains.
Quantum-resistance roadmap
The Algorand Foundation plans to make the chain quantum-resistant by the end of 2027, adding accounts that use post-quantum (Falcon) signatures, hybrid accounts and a new way to select validators, with first upgrades in 2026. Google’s Quantum AI team has highlighted Algorand’s work in this area.
2026 developments
- US regulators reportedly classified ALGO as a digital commodity in spring 2026, reducing legal uncertainty.
- The Algorand Foundation and Algorand Technologies merged into a single organization.
- Revolut began offering ALGO staking in 2026.
The ALGO token
| ALGO at a glance | |
|---|---|
| Maximum supply | 10 billion ALGO |
| In circulation (Oct 2026) | about 9.1 billion |
| Price (29 Oct 2026) | about $0.10 |
| All-time high | about $3.56 (June 2019, at launch) |
| Market cap | about $930 million (#78) |
Risks
- Adoption. DeFi and app activity remain small compared with leading chains.
- Competition. Solana, Ethereum’s Layer 2s and others attract most developers and users.
- Price history. ALGO launched at a very high price and has fallen for most of its life.
Algorand vs. the competition
| Algorand | Hedera | Solana | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finality | ~3 seconds, instant | 3–5 seconds | Seconds (faster after Alpenglow) |
| Focus | Payments, tokenization, quantum-safety | Enterprise | Trading, apps |
| Governance | Foundation | Council of companies | Foundation |
Our verdict
Algorand is a thoughtfully designed, academically respected blockchain that is ahead of most rivals on quantum resistance. But adoption has lagged for years, and ALGO is about 97% below its launch price. ALGO is a high-risk investment: invest only what you can afford to lose.
