Overview
Atomic Wallet is a multi-asset wallet for desktop and mobile, launched in 2017 and based in Estonia. It supports more than 1,000 coins and tokens and offers swaps, purchases and staking in one place. It is self-custody: keys are encrypted on your device and backed up by a 12-word phrase.
Features
- Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Cardano, Tron, BNB Chain and many tokens.
- Swaps through partner exchange services.
- Staking for coins such as ADA, SOL, ATOM, DOT and TRX.
- Buy crypto with a card through partners.
Security
Atomic Wallet suffered one of the largest wallet hacks ever. In June 2023 thousands of users had their wallets drained; blockchain analysts estimated losses of over $100 million, and the attack was attributed to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. The cause was never fully explained publicly. Atomic said less than 0.1% of its users were affected, but many victims did not receive compensation and filed lawsuits.
The app’s code is not fully open source, which makes independent review harder.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Wide range of supported assets.
- Simple interface on desktop and mobile.
- Staking for many coins.
Cons
- Major 2023 hack with an unclear cause.
- Not fully open source.
- Swap spreads can be high.
- No hardware wallet support.
Who it’s for
Atomic suits users who want one simple app for many coins. Given its history, we would only use it for small amounts.
Verdict
Atomic Wallet is convenient, but the 2023 hack — and the lack of a clear explanation — is hard to ignore. Safer alternatives with similar features exist, such as Exodus or Trust Wallet. If you use Atomic, keep balances low.
