Consensus mechanism

Also called: consensus

In shortThe rules a blockchain uses so that thousands of computers agree on which transactions happened, in what order.

The two main families are proof of work (computers compete with electricity) and proof of stake (validators lock up coins as collateral). Both make cheating more expensive than playing fair.
