Aster

Perp DEXMulti-chain

Overview

Aster is a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures (“perps”): contracts that let you bet on a coin’s price going up or down, with leverage, without owning the coin. It was formed in late 2024 by the merger of Astherus (a yield protocol) and APX Finance (formerly ApolloX, the engine behind PancakeSwap’s perps), and took the name Aster in March 2025.

Aster is backed by YZi Labs, the investment firm of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao (CZ). When CZ publicly praised the project and the ASTER token launched in September 2025, it became one of the fastest-growing perp DEXs, for a while rivalling Hyperliquid in reported volume.

You trade from your own wallet on BNB Chain, Ethereum, Arbitrum or Solana, or on Aster’s own blockchain, Aster Chain, which went live in March 2026. Aster also offers perps on US stocks and, since June 2026, prediction markets.

Trading modes

  • Simple mode (1001x): one-click trading, aimed at casual traders. Orders are executed against Aster’s liquidity pool, are protected from MEV and allow leverage of up to 1001x on some pairs.
  • Pro mode: a full order book with limit orders, charts, hidden orders and grid trading, for experienced traders. Leverage is lower than in Simple mode on most pairs.
  • Shield mode (since December 2025): a protected mode where orders are kept off the public order book, so other traders and bots cannot see or hunt your positions. Up to 1001x on BTC and ETH, with isolated margin.

A word on leverage: at 1001x, a price move of about 0.1% against you can wipe out your position. Such leverage is marketing, not a strategy. Most professional traders use 5x or less.

Other products

  • Earn: yield products such as asBNB (liquid staked BNB) and USDF, Aster’s yield-bearing stablecoin, which can also be used as trading margin.
  • Stock perps: trade Apple, Tesla, Nvidia and other US stocks as perpetual contracts, 24/7.
  • Prediction markets: bet on event outcomes, launched with zero trading fees.
  • Aster Code: an API that lets developers build trading apps on Aster.

Fees

Cost Typical amount Notes
Pro mode maker / taker About 0.01% / 0.035% Lower for high-volume traders
Simple mode Fee on opening and closing Higher than Pro; shown before you trade
Funding rate Variable, every few hours Paid between longs and shorts
Network (gas) fee Low; free on Aster Chain Depends on the chain you use

Perps also carry funding rates, small payments between long and short traders that keep the contract close to the real price. They can add up if you hold a position for days. Aster has said it plans a PnL mode that charges fees only on profitable trades.

Rates at the time of writing (October 2026). Check Aster’s fee page before you trade.

ASTER token and buybacks

ASTER is used for staking, governance and fee discounts. Since June 2026, Aster sends about 99% of daily platform fees into automatic ASTER buybacks, with the bought tokens going to veASTER stakers and matching amounts burned. In August 2026 the team replaced a scheduled monthly unlock of team tokens with a staking-only emission model. By its first anniversary in September 2026, Aster reported about $477 million in total fees.

Controversies and risks

Aster’s fast rise has come with problems you should know about:

  • September 2025: a pricing error on the XPL perpetual made the price spike far above other exchanges, liquidating many traders. Aster compensated affected users.
  • October 2025: DefiLlama temporarily removed Aster’s perp volume from its rankings after data showed it closely mirrored Binance’s volume, raising wash-trading concerns. Reported volume later fell, and in early 2026 Aster’s activity dropped well below Hyperliquid’s.
  • Binance links: the ties to CZ and YZi Labs bring attention and liquidity, but also concentration risk.
  • Liquidity pool risk: in Simple mode you trade against Aster’s pool. In extreme market moves, pools and liquidation systems are tested, as several perp DEXs learned in October 2025.
  • Country restrictions: Aster restricts users in some countries. Check the terms before trading.

Our verdict

Aster is a feature-rich perp DEX with interesting ideas: hidden orders in Shield mode, stock perps, yield-bearing margin and one of the most aggressive token buyback programmes in crypto. For experienced traders who want to stay self-custodial, it is a real alternative to Hyperliquid and Lighter.

It is not a place for beginners. Ignore the 1001x headline, keep leverage low, use stop-losses and never trade money you cannot afford to lose. Its past incidents and the questions about its volume are reasons to stay cautious and not to keep more on the platform than you need for trading.

This review is for information only and is not financial advice. Crypto is volatile and you can lose money. Leveraged trading can lose you more than your initial stake very quickly.
