Overview
OKX is one of the largest crypto exchanges in the world. It was founded in 2017 (originally as OKEx) by Star Xu, and today says it serves more than 120 million accounts. Its headquarters are in Seychelles and Dubai, with regulated entities in many regions.
What makes OKX different is that it combines two things in one app:
- a full centralized exchange (spot, futures, options, earn products), and
- a self-custody Web3 wallet, where you hold your own keys and can use DeFi apps on many blockchains.
You switch between the two with one tap at the top of the app. For someone who wants to learn on-chain crypto without juggling several apps, that is a real advantage.
In March 2026, Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), the owner of the New York Stock Exchange, announced an investment in OKX at a $25 billion valuation, with plans to bring ICE futures and tokenized NYSE-listed stocks to OKX customers. Few deals show more clearly how traditional finance and crypto are converging.
OKX in the EU (MiCA)
OKX holds a full MiCA licence through its European hub in Malta, which lets OKX Europe serve the whole European Economic Area. Cryptensive’s link goes to the EU platform. OKX Europe offers spot trading, conversions, OTC, trading bots, copy trading and euro deposits via SEPA. As with other licensed exchanges, some products from the global platform (especially high-leverage derivatives) are limited or unavailable to EU retail users.
After the MiCA transition period ended on 1 July 2026, OKX reported a strong rise in European sign-ups and deposits, as users moved from unlicensed platforms.
What you can do on OKX
- Spot and convert: hundreds of coins, an order book for traders and a simple convert screen for beginners.
- Derivatives (global platform): perpetual and dated futures and options, with a unified account and portfolio margin for advanced traders.
- Trading bots: grid, DCA, arbitrage and other strategy bots.
- Copy trading: follow lead traders on spot or futures.
- Simple Earn and on-chain earn: savings, staking and structured products.
- OKX Wallet: a self-custody wallet supporting dozens of networks (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Sui and many more), with a built-in DEX aggregator, NFT marketplace and DApp browser. Your keys stay with you, not with OKX.
- OKX Card and payments in some regions.
Fees
| Product | Regular user (maker / taker) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Spot | 0.08% / 0.10% | Lower with VIP tiers or OKB holdings |
| Perpetuals and futures | 0.02% / 0.05% | Global platform |
| Convert | No separate fee, spread in the price | |
| Web3 Wallet swaps | Network fees + aggregator spread | Paid on-chain |
OKX’s regular spot fee is slightly lower than Binance or Bybit. Fees fall as your 30-day volume or holdings of OKB, OKX’s own token, grow. Withdrawal fees depend on the coin and network. OKX Europe has its own fee page.
These are standard rates at the time of writing (October 2026); check the official fee page before you trade.
Security
- Proof of Reserves: OKX publishes monthly reports with a Merkle tree and zk-STARK proofs, so users can verify their balance is included and that reserves cover customer assets.
- Cold storage: most customer funds are kept in offline, multi-signature wallets.
- Account protection: 2FA, passkeys, withdrawal whitelists, anti-phishing codes and device management.
- The Web3 Wallet is self-custody: OKX cannot freeze or recover it. Write down your seed phrase and keep it offline. If you lose it, nobody can help you.
OKX has not suffered a major hack of its main exchange. Its record is not spotless, however: in February 2025 it pleaded guilty in the US to operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business (serving US customers it should have blocked) and agreed to pay more than $504 million. It has since relaunched a compliant US platform.
Getting started on OKX
- Sign up on the EU platform (if you live in the EEA) and complete identity verification. It usually takes minutes.
- Turn on security first: an authenticator app or passkey, an anti-phishing code and a withdrawal whitelist.
- Deposit euros by SEPA, which is cheaper than a card purchase.
- Buy with a limit order on the spot screen rather than Convert, to pay the lower maker fee.
- When you are ready to explore DeFi, create the Web3 Wallet, back up the seed phrase on paper, and send a small test amount before moving anything larger.

Our verdict
OKX is one of the best all-round exchanges in 2026. It has deep liquidity, low fees, a MiCA licence for European users and, above all, the best integration of a centralized exchange with a self-custody Web3 wallet. The ICE investment adds credibility and points to new products such as tokenized stocks.
It is a great fit for users who want to trade on an exchange and gradually move into DeFi. Complete beginners may prefer something simpler at first, and everyone should treat the Web3 wallet with care: there, you are your own bank.
